The Jamestown, Rhode Island town council has directed its administrator to evaluate the financial feasibility of operating a reduced 62-site RV park at Fort Getty, down from 75 sites currently. The move follows a 55-page report from an ad hoc committee, whose guiding principles and recommendations the council adopted, including utility upgrades, accessibility improvements, and a shift toward presenting the site as a multi-use park rather than solely an RV destination. A subsequent budget vote and possible bond measure are expected.
The decision reflects broader challenges facing municipally owned campgrounds, including infrastructure costs, site capacity planning, and the balance between recreational use and long-term financial sustainability.
