A New Campground Under Construction Near Smelterville, ID

The Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation, in conjunction with the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality, announced the construction of a 26-site campground along the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes.

The new tent-only campground will be located along the trail to enhance overnight access and promote sustainable recreation, a press release said. It is tailored for “bikepackers,” touring cyclists and adventurers who may also choose to fly into the nearby airport, or other travelers seeking a quiet overnight camping option.

This project is a great example of how we’re creating more opportunities for Idahoans and visitors to connect with our state parks through unique camping experiences and ensuring these experiences are here for future generations,” said Susan Buxton, IDPR director.

The new campground will feature secure bike parking, a shower house, potable water, E-bike charging and hammock posts. It is also near three communities that offer supplies, exploration and dining.

Stretching 73 miles across the Idaho Panhandle from Mullan to Plummer, the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes was named one of the nation’s top 25 trails by the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy.

“The Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes, developed through a landmark partnership with the Coeur d’Alene Tribe, Union Pacific Railroad, the State of Idaho, and the U.S. Government, continues to stand as a model of collaborative recreation planning,” the release said.
