Abilene City Council voted to approve a new RV Park near Lake Ft. Phantom (KTXS/Karina)

Thursday the Abilene City Council approved a new RV Park to be built approximately one mile away from Lake Ft. Phantom. The RV Park may be good news to some but not everyone shares the same excitement.

A resident who lives approximately 3/4 mile away from the lake attended the city council meeting and expressed his beliefs about the lake being an eyesore.

I don’t know if you all spend your vacations or your weekends at Ft Phantom. I doubt it because we’re not known for a beautiful lake.”

The concerned resident believes nothing good will come from building an RV Park.

We have a very ugly lake, a very undeveloped lake. It’s pretty much an eyesore all the way around the lake. This RV Park will do nothing to developing and an environment where someone would want to visit our lake.”

The resident expressed concerns that the RV Park would decrease the value of the surround area.

Nobody is going to develop around an RV Park. Nobody wants to put a nice house there. Nobody wants to put a business, or maybe a resort where you can see that RV Park.”

Cedric De Bourbon-Poisson who owns the lot where the future RV Park will be built is hoping the park will attract tourist.

We are dedicating over 7 acres of our property to create an open wildflower meadow,” De Bourbon-Poisson said. “The meadow will serve as a sanctuary for butterflies and birds. Providing a unique educational experience for families, local schools, and tourist.”

Lesli Andrews the director of Parks and Recreations says they are working on a plan to beautify Lake Ft Phantom.

On Mar 28th we’re going to be doing and open house at the Health Department in their conference room from 5:30 to 7:30. We want to hear from as many people as we can about what they would like to see at Ft. Phantom. It can be anything from fishing spots, bird watching, to boat ramp improvements.”
